- Not suitable for heavy traffic without a base.
- Loose stones can shift under weight.
- Cannot be used as a standalone base.
- Can be scattered by lawn mowers and requires a border.
- Higher cost compared to other limestone products.

Limerock Screenings
Also known as Paver Base, Lime Fines, or Stone Dust.
Limerock screenings are a very fine product used for paver base, walkways and trails, filling voids in larger aggregate, barn or shed floors, and landscaping.
Pros
- Compacts well.
- Great to spread thin over a solid base.
- Easy to spread and shape by hand.
Cons
- Poor drainage and can become muddy.
- Washout potential.
- Not ideal for heavy traffic.
- Can be dusty.
- Avoid in wet areas.
#5 Rock
Most recommended for driveways or areas that need to drain well.
#5 Rock is a washed limerock with little to no fines. The stone size is approximately 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches.
Pros
- Excellent drainage.
- Does not get muddy or dusty like road base.
- Holds up well under traffic.
Cons
- Does not compact as well as road base.
- Can be difficult to walk on or hard on bare feet.
- May require occasional regrading.
Base Rock
Also known as Road Base or Crushed Rock.
This is a limerock-based product containing a range of sizes, from fine granules to rocks up to 2 1/2 inches. While primarily used as a base for asphalt, it is also an affordable option for creating a solid driveway.
Pros
- Compacts tightly to provide a solid foundation.
- One of the most affordable limerock products available.
Cons
- Can become very dusty in dry conditions.
- Can become muddy in wet conditions.
- Water does not drain through, so washouts are likely in sloped areas.
- One of the less attractive limerock products.
